All about Contact Lenses

Monovision contact lenses, wear contact lenses, clean contact lenses

Eye care specialists prescribe glasses or contact lens to people who suffer from astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness. These enable them to look at any object without difficulty.

Contact lens is more advantageous because they provide the user with an unobstructed vision which the glasses cannot. Therefore, people, especially sports persons, use contact lenses instead of the glasses. But there are many others who wear glasses for fashion statement.

People are using contact lenses past many years and still there are people who believe that they are not safe for eyes. The doctors say that healthier and convenient options of contact lenses are now available for use. You just need to consult your eye specialist. He or she will test you and prescribe it according to your requirement. They will even refer the kind of lens you require to wear since there are three kinds of contact lenses for different eye sight problems.

The three kinds of contact lenses are classified according to the material.

• GP Lenses – it is also known as “oxygen permeable” or RGP lenses. It is made from rigid and waterless plastics. It is smaller than the iris. It is best for high astigmatism and presbyopia.
• Soft lenses – they are prepared from gel like and water containing plastics. They are slight larger than the iris.
• Hard lenses – they are made from Plexiglas or Lucite which is also known as PMMA. They are rarely used.

These lenses are for daily use but should be removed during the night. But the “extended wear” lenses were introduced which allowed the user to wear them continuously, even during the night time, for seven consecutive days. Some brands of contact lenses can be worn for 30 consecutive nights. It is the maximum lens wearing time permitted by FDA.

You need to take proper care while using the contact lenses. They are required to be cleaned, disinfected and stored in the given kit. Even after the proper care, the contact lenses are needed to be disposed or replaced at regular intervals. This avoids contamination that is the cause of eye infections.

Few contact lenses, especially soft lenses, are thrown away after a wearing for a single day or after two days. When used overnight they are discarded after a week and when used for 30 days then it should be disposed after the month. There are few lenses that thrown away after a month or after a longer period of time.

Contact lenses are available in various designs – bifocal, toric, orthokeratology, spherical lenses. They are also available with different features such as colored lenses, custom, prosthetic, hybrid, special effect and UV-Inhibiting lenses.
